Rocklin racks up another win on the road to the Junior League World Series
The Rocklin Junior all-stars kept rolling through the Little League Western Regionals on Friday with a 10-0 win over Montana. Austin Dick threw 5 scoreless innings in shutting down the Montana offense, allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5. Dick, who threw only 60 pitches in the game, worked out of trouble in the second inning by inducing a fly out to right field with 2 outs and the bases loaded. The Rocklin pitcher kept Montana off the scoreboard by continually getting ahead in the count and using an off-speed pitch to silence a strong offense.
Michael Blattel, Zach Green and Carson Wittwer led the Rocklin offense with 2 hits each as the boys from Northern California banged out 11 hits in the shortened game. Gordy Gordon, Tanner McVey, Dillon Buban, Drake Ritchie, and Dick also had hits for an offense that scored runs in all 5 innings.
Rocklin continued its string of fast starts in the first inning when Zach Green led off the game with a single, stole second, and advanced to third base on a ground out. Gordon then drove him home with a single to put Rocklin on the board. Blattel followed with a single to right that was misplayed by the Montana right fielder allowing Gordon to score and Blattel to get to third base. After the second out of the inning, J.R. Robinson reached base due to a catcher's interference and Sean Kinsella followed with a walk to load the bases. Drake Ritchie got hit in the helmet with the first pitch of his at bat to plate Blattel with the third Rocklin run. Dick then drew a walk to plate Robinson with the fourth and final run of the inning.
Wittwer singled in Grady Allin in the second inning to put Rocklin 5-0. Buban hit a double to center field and Ritchie followed with a single to start the third inning. Both would come around to score to add to Rocklin's lead. A Ritchie sacrifice fly increased the advantage to 8-0 after 4 innings.
Rocklin began the fifth inning with back to back doubles by Green and McVey to make the score 9-0. The game would end with Blattel scoring on a Montana error.
Rocklin now sits a top of Pool B at 3-0, along with Southern California, who is also 3-0. The two teams will play on Sunday with the winner getting the #1 seed for Monday's playoffs.
